Neck pain, tension headaches, migraines, trigeminal neuralgia, occipital neuralgia are conditions that are often misunderstood.
Most practitioners focus on small things happening in the neck—disc bulges, arthritic changes, alignment issues, herniated discs. Sometimes this works, at least temporarily, but if your neck pain or headaches keep returning, then you’re missing something.
To feel what you might be missing, try this little test. Sit down in a chair or on the couch and place a pillow under your armpit so that it’s holding the shoulder up a little higher than normal. Then place your hand on top of the pillow like in the picture. Relax there for about 10 minutes.
Does this feel good to you? Do you notice less tension in your head or neck? Can you turn your head further or with less pain when you’re in this position?
This is the key to what you’ve been missing—your practitioners haven’t been looking at the bigger picture. How many of your treatments have looked at your shoulders to fix your neck pain or headaches? How many have fixed your posture strategy? How you sleep? Fixing these types of issues fixes your neck pain, tension headaches, migraines, trigeminal neuralgia, or occipital neuralgia.
We understand how the body works as a system here at Body in Balance Physical Therapy. In addition to manual therapy techniques, therapeutic dry needling and other types of treatments, we target how you’re using your body—fixing your habits. This is a powerful approach to fixing pain.
